Hindu's and Persians have wondered since the beginning of time. I will credit Sideways in Time as the modern start point.
Most alternative histories are mild parallel universe. The original Star Trek really made a hard break. Man in the High Castle is classic. The tv series Slider and the excellent Fringe built a foundation. I dont know which came first, Half life the essential video game or the short story The Myst by Stephen King. They share the same universe and IMHO half life is far more immersive.
Recently Star Trek Discovery made this place the story, and Cloverfield tied together the trilogy with inter-dimensional travel.
